Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) on Weldings, D-Rings, and Stoppers of Cargo on Vessel
Benefits Of Inspection
- Accurate Defect Detection – Identifies flaws without damaging the material.
- Cost Efficiency – Reduces repair and downtime costs through early detection.
- Safety Assurance – Ensures structural reliability and operational safety.
- Regulatory Compliance – Meets industry and classification standards.
Extended Equipment Life – Helps in preventive maintenance and longevity of assets.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) on Weldings, D-Rings, and Stoppers of Cargo on Vessel
- Objective
To carry out Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) using a Yoke machine and magnetic spray to detect surface or near-surface cracks on weldings, D-rings, and stoppers used for cargo securing onboard the vessel.
- Work Description
Inspection of weld joints, D-rings, and stoppers on cargo and deck areas using an AC Yoke method and approved magnetic particle spray to assess weld integrity and fitness for sea transport.
- Method of Testing
- Clean the test area to remove paint, rust, or grease.
- Apply Yoke ensuring firm contact and energize to create magnetic field.
- Spray magnetic particles (visible or fluorescent type) while the Yoke is active.
- Inspect for particle accumulation indicating defects.
- Demagnetize and clean the area after testing.
- Equipment and Materials
- Portable AC Yoke machine (calibrated).
- Magnetic particle spray – visible or fluorescent.
- Cleaning materials and adequate lighting (≥1000 lux).
- Acceptance Criteria
Testing as per ASTM E709 / ISO 9934 or relevant classification society standards.
No cracks or linear indications allowed in critical load-bearing areas.
- Reporting
Final report to include:
- Locations tested and results (with photos).
- Equipment details and calibration status.
- Inspector’s qualification and signature.
- Personnel
Testing by qualified Level II NDT inspectors (ASNT SNT-TC-1A / ISO 9712).
- Safety Precautions
Follow vessel safety rules.
Ensure electrical safety and proper PPE (gloves, goggles, safety shoes).
Avoid aerosol use near open flames.
